HOPE, RED NECK REMODELS & LLAMAS
April 6th, 2010

Well, we have been doing a lot of "Red Neck Remodels"..don’t worry it isn’t offensive, that is what the people of Kentucky call it!!  There are times when we catch ourselves wondering why we are patching this up, when it seems so temporary??  The leader of the ministry where we are lodging spoke to our group on this topic.  Dora says that these small repairs give them hope for tomorrow.  Life is so overwhelming to these people who are stuck in poverty.  A small thing like getting a sink or floor repaired gives them a hope that they can pick themselves up and work to make life better.  It feels good to the kids to help put a smile on faces in the name of Jesus.

Judi Lindgren and Gerry Baker, did you know that Stephen and Staci were expert Llama herders?  Scott describes what Stephen did as a ‘Steve Irwin’ experience!  That llama was not getting the best of him!!  A large group of the kids (and Sandie Harper who hid behind the kids) went to help one of the ministry groups herd llamas to take them outside of the city limits.  They keep the llamas to give llama rides to campers that they minister to throughout the year.  ..the only catch is that they can’t keep the animals in the city limits all year, so they take them out for a month right before the camp season starts and we helped!

Today will be full of finishing up all of our projects in this area so that we can head to Booneville tomorrow to repair a rotting floor for a local pastor.  Thank you for your prayers and please continue to pray for Scott and Gary who are coming down with colds.

HE IS RISEN INDEED!
April 5th, 2010

Alex "Easter Bunny" Grantham was a hit in the Holler!  We started the day with a wonderful Easter Service where Mark O’Neill found himself singing with a dozen women (none under the age of 70) in the Easter Cantata!  After church we headed to Moorehead to put on a Family Easter Celebration for a great group of kids.  Our kids were so great, playing with the kids, doing crafts, face painting and teaching the Resurrection story to the group.

Our evening ended with the Passion of  The Christ movie.  Today will be a truly tiring and rewarding day as we tackle a damaged toilet and shower, reinforcing a deck, among several other tasks!

**Just a note to all of you parents:  these kids are amazing!  They work harder than anyone we have seen!  Good job parents!

SERVICE & SCRIPTURE: THE PERFECT COUPLE
April 5th, 2010

On day one of our trip Scott challenged us all with memorizing The Beattitudes, Matthew 5:3-11.  Boys against girls…the losers must serve the winners Easter Dinner!  The Bibles were opened and it was on!  Each day the boys and girls were neck and neck with each student memorizing like crazy and then reciting to either Scott or Sandi these wonderful pearls of truth from Jesus.  Alas we were tied with two boys left to go and two girls left to go at breakfast this morning.  When the afternoon hit the girls proved victorious!!!  We will be served dinner by the most wonderful group of boys & men on the planet!

It has been an incredible couple of days for our entire group.  We are facing poverty like none of us has seen.  We leave the homes that we work on feeling both sad and confused at how people can live this way.  We are blessed to be staying with a wonderful woman who had dedicated her life to serving people here in Lee County.  She really opened our eyes and hearts tonight as she spoke about the cycle of poverty throughout the generations and the feeling of hopelessness that these people feel which leads to apathy and despair–of course Dora tells us all of this in her wonderful Kentucky accent : ) you think Scott is hard to understand???, well Dora has him beat by a mile!! J

We have been building, painting, burning brush, cutting trees, piling wood, playing with kids, fixing car after car (thanks to Todd!), laying carpet and vinyl and we have days of work ahead of us!  Tomorrow we will go to church and put on a family celebration in Manchester, then it is back to work!

Everyone is well and sends love to their families.  Marissa got the prize for first tick!  Happy Easter!!

GREAT DAY THURSDAY!
April 1st, 2010

It has been a wonderful first day on our trip.  Today in Franklin (a suburb of Nashville) we spent the day with Howie and Heather Klausner (former islanders & oicc members!).  We visited The Sound Kitchen, a major recording studio….a great time for our budding musicians that are on trip!  We then went to lunch with Toby Mac’s manager who spoke to the group about following God’s plan for your life and how you can serve Him with all of your many talents!

It was great to hear about a wildly successful singer who is reaching out to tons of people and in the meantime, keeping a perspective on his first ministry, his family.  It really showed the group the importance of balancing the output of service with the input of allowing God to breathe His Spirit into our lives.  We then toured the area to see huge plantation mansions…..(Scott has a plan to contrast this with what we will encounter later in our trip, we are all waiting in suspense!).

All the kids send love to their parents!  Everyone is healthy and happy!
